Competitor analysis in Claude: which MCP connectors do what
Most marketing connectors for Claude read your own accounts. Competitor analysis needs the opposite: data about businesses whose accounts you will never see. Here is how the options split, and what each one is good for.
Two kinds of connector
- Inside-out connectors log into an account you own or manage: your Google Ads, Meta Ads, Analytics or Business Profile. Great for reporting and running campaigns. They cannot tell you anything about a rival.
- Outside-in connectors read public or licensed data about any business: ads libraries, search results, keyword and backlink databases, public reviews, page speed. This is what competitor analysis runs on.
The main options, by job
| Connector type | Good for | For competitor analysis |
|---|---|---|
| Official Meta Ads connector | Reading and changing campaigns in your own ad accounts | No rival data |
| Official Google Ads MCP | Read-only reporting on accounts you have access to | No rival data |
| Reporting connectors (many sources in one) | Blending your clients’ Ads, Analytics and Business Profile data | Your accounts only |
| SEO suite connectors | Keyword, ranking and backlink data from the suite’s own index | Yes for SEO; needs the suite’s subscription (Semrush lists eligible plans) |
| Raw data APIs as MCP | Every endpoint, pay per request | Yes, if you assemble the analysis yourself |
| Ad library tools | Competitors’ creatives, history and alerts | Ads only |
| Versusbrief | A prospect against its local rivals: map pack, reviews, searches, ads, speed, and a plan | Yes, one request, read-only |
What to check before you add one
- Where the data comes from. Official APIs and licensed databases keep working. Scraped sources break, and some directories reject connectors built on them.
- Whether it can write. For work on a client’s account, a read-only connector plus a file you upload yourself is the safer default.
- How it bills. Agents loop. A per-request connector with no cap can run up a bill; look for credits with overage off.
- Meta coverage. Meta’s Ad Library API returns ads delivered in the EU and UK, plus political ads. A connector claiming full US Meta ad data is not using that API.
